South Korea, Japan, US to sign intelligence-sharing pact

Seoul : South Korea, Japan and the US will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on sharing military intelligence about nuclear and missile programmes of North Korea, a media report said Friday.

South Korea's Vice Defence Minister Baek Seung-joo, Japan's Vice Defence Minister Masanori Nishi and US Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work will ink the pact in their respective countries without holding a signing ceremony, Xinhua reported citing the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

"South Korea will deliver intelligence to the US, who in turn will pass it on to Japan after South Korea's approval. Japan will give intelligence to the US, who in turn will forward it to South Korea after Japan's approval," a South Korean defence ministry official was quoted as saying.

Under the pact, South Korea and Japan will not exchange military intelligence directly, and the shared intelligence will be limited to the North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.
