New Delhi: An Indian Navy Commander has died on board an under construction Kolkata class warship in Mumbai while two  civilian employees of the Mazagon Docks Limited, the ship builder have been injured. The accident took place at the Mumbai Port Trust this morning when the machinery trials were going on  board the warship.

According to sources, Commander Kuntal Wadhwa, a 1997 batch officer of the Navy has been killed while two others have been injured. The under trial warship a 6700 tonne destroyer, was slated to be commissioned  in three months from now and was not handed over to the Navy for operations.

Till the warship is commissioned it is not a property of the Navy. Commander Wadhwa was stationed on board as part of the trial team. Three Kolkata class warships are being built by the Mazagon Dock Limited , a public Sector company owned by the Ministry of Defence. Naval destroyer ships named—Kolkata, Kochi and Chennai, respectively  — are being built as part of the Defence Ministry’s project 15-A at a cost of Rs.8,459 crore ( approx US $ 1.40 Billion).

The Mazagon Docks Limited said the accident occurred when the carbon dioxide unit malfunctioned that led to a gas leak. The ship will now be checked and then again be certified for trails which could take a few months. The construction of Kolkata class destroyers has been delayed by more than four years, the first ship was expected to be delivered by MDL in 2010.

These are follow-on to the Delhi class destroyers of the Indian Navy. In the past five years, the MDL has turned out the stealth frigates of the 4950 tonne Shivalik class.   The Navy has ordered a board of inquiry into the death. On February 26 two Navy officers, Lieutenant Commander Kapish Muwal and Lieutenant Manoranajan Kumar had died, when  a fire erupted on board the submarine INS Sindhuratna.
