No airspace violation in eastern India: IAF

Shillong: There have been no incursions into India''s eastern airspace in the recent past, an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer said Wednesday.

IAF vice chief-designate Air Marshal K.K. Nohwar, however, told journalists here that a "posture" was maintained between India and China and that "every country has the right to defend its own territory".

"We will not allow any country to violate our airspace and if any of our neighbours tries to send aircraft into Indian airspace, they will meet the same fate as that of PN Atlantique," he said.

On August 10, 1999, an IAF MiG-21 shot down a Pakistani Atlantique reconnaissance aircraft over Sir Creek area in Gujarat after it intruded the Indian airspace.

When asked whether the IAF also deploys unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Nohwar said: "We do use UAVs, which we in India call Remotely Piloted Aircraft."

The IAF will induct more Sukhoi Su-30 combat jets, as also more radars in the northeast, as part of a strategic deployment of advanced assets close to the Chinese border, said Nowhar, who currently heads the Shillong-based Eastern Air Command and will take over as the IAF vice chief Aug 1.
