Srinagar : The Indian Air Force (IAF) Monday flew special sorties to airlift 126 people stranded in snowbound areas of Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was carried out in Gurez in the Valley and Kargil town in Ladakh, an official statement issued here said.

"The IAF airlifted 90 passengers to and from Gurez today. While 44 passengers were airlifted in two sorties of Mi-17 helicopter from district headquarter Bandipora to Dawar (Gurez), 46 passengers were airlifted from Dawar to Bandipora. "Meanwhile, 36 passengers were airlifted from Kargil to Srinagar in AN-32 Kargil Courier aircraft," it added.

The sorties will be conducted Tuesday as well, subject to weather conditions. Last week, the IAF had run special sorties between summer capital Srinagar and winter capital Jammu to airlift around 1,400 stranded passengers because of the blockade of Srinagar-Jammu highway due to heavy snowfall.
