Great expectations from DRDO: Modi

New Delhi :Self reliance in defence sector is the key to strengthen Indian Armed Forces and Narendra Modi led new government’s decision to raise the limit of FDI from 26  per cent to 49 per cent is seen as a firm step in this direction. The seriousness with which the government is pursuing towards this goal is well understood by the Prime Minister Modi’s speech at an award function held here at DRDO Bhavan on Wednesday.

He acclaimed the defence scientists for their relentless efforts to make India less dependent on foreign countries for the modernization of armed forces by developing various critical defence systems in DRDO laboratories. While congratulating DRDO for its immense contribution in defence sector, he called for vigorous innovations in this sector. “  DRDO should now look for new ideas and young talent available anywhere in the country including the armed forces so that we can develop new and better systems for our armed forces,” he said.  

Modi also stressed need for timely delivery of projects to keep India secure from external challenges. “Matching pace with the fast changing technology is the need of the day. We also have to keep ourselves ahead of others. The defence technology which has to come in 2020 from outside, we have to be ready with it by 2018,” he said.

Expressing concerns of the soldiers deployed at the harsh border terrains, Modi said that our research should focus on developing lighter weapons and systems to ease the burden of soldiers. “ If we could even  reduce the weight of his water bottle or other such items he carries, it would help him in a great way,” Prime Minister said. He also emphasized need for more researches in the field of life sciences for the solders’ benefit.

The Prime Minister said there is a great expectation from an organization which has potential and DRDO has immense potential to deliver, therefore we have all the more expectations from it.

Modi gave away awards to distinguished scientists for their valuable contributions in defence research.

On this occassion the Defence Minister Arun Jaitley in his speech congratulated the award winning scientists, and said DRDO has a very important responsibility to perform for the country. MoS for Defence Rao Inderjeet Singh, MoS PMO Dr. Jitendra Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister Shri Avinash Chander were also present on the occasion.
