‘Ka-226T helicopter JV is being registered, production soon’

The joint venture between India and Russia for producing Kamaov Ka-226T light helicopters in India will open new vistas of defence cooperation between the two countries. The documentation for the JV is over and now formal registration of the JV by respective government bodies is awaited. Indian defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Russian Rosoboronexport and Russian Helicopters created the JV last year. The JV is formed on the basis of 50.5% share for India and 49.5% shares for Russia.

Mr Viktor Kladov, head of International Cooperation, Rostec has said, “Since October 2016 the project has been moving full-steam-ahead. We have conducted multiple negotiations, most recently in January 2017. In January the documents for the JV have been completed and they have been sent for registration with the relevant government bodies. I expect this will happen soon. This is the final stage of forming the joint venture company.”

The project cost is estimated to be over $ 1 billion. One of the partners in the JV, Russian Helicopters is a part of Rostec State Corporation of Russia. Russia operated more than Ka-226T helicopters. Rostec’s Ka-226T helicopters will be produced in Tumkur plant of HAL near Bangaluru under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

HAL-Kamov joint venture will produce around 200 Kamov 226T copters at a cost of nearly Rs 6,500 crore. An inter-governmental agreement to this effect was inked last year. Incidentally, the T-226 chopper is also fitted with Turbomeca engines, but a different variant. The twin-engined Kamov 226Twill replace the single-engine Cheetah/Chetak, usually deployed for surveillance, dropping small loads and for rescue, including of troops posted at forbidding heights such as the Siachen Glacier-Saltoro Ridge region. Out of 200 helicopters, 40 will be produced in Russia and rest will be produced in India.

The light multirole Ka-226T helicopter with a coaxial main rotor system has a maximum takeoff weight of 3.6 tonnes and can carry up to 1 ton payload.  Its main distinguishing feature is modular design. A passenger cabin can be easily installed, which allows it carry up to 6 people or equipments and supply.  The helicopter is easy to operate, boasts incredibly precise hovering, has excellent maneuverability and handling, easy to maintain, has large power capacity and features maximum safety.

Rostec is a Russian corporation, created in 2007 to promote development, production and export of high-tech industrial products for civil and military purposes. It is comprised of over 700 organizations, which form 9 holding companies in the military-industrial complex and 6 in civilian industries, as well as 32 organizations under direct management.
